What is the self-question and why is it important?

autopregunta

The self-question consists of a strategy of great help in the learning process, it facilitates the verification of the information that we are acquiring in the different stages of training. Doing it in a deep, comprehensive and meaningful way increases the chances of improving the efficiency in the study.

As the study process progresses, the volume of information increases, therefore, it is essential to make sure that we have correctly understood each topic, item or paragraph that we have read.

Its importance lies in the fact that by using it it is possible to identify the topics that we have understood and those that still require a deeper reading or an exhaustive review.

The fact of asking ourselves questions leads to a kind of self-assessment and therefore enables an assessment of the knowledge acquired. In order to be able to formulate and answer them, it is necessary to previously have knowledge on the specific topic.

Encouraging this strategy among students helps improve reading comprehension, foster reflexivity, improve vocabulary, spelling, and deepen knowledge.

Some ways to apply this strategy are as follows:

  • Read a paragraph carefully and wonder about its content, then explain it.
  • Make five general questions about a reading, and answer them as concisely as possible.
  • Ask questions based on a keyword.

It is a positive strategy for executive functions such as attention, memory, planning and internal language.
